The Easiest Way to Invest and Beat the Best

Do you fit in the group of wealthy people, but believe thinking about money is boring or a touchy subject? A good portion of high-income producers, particularly those who come from poor backgrounds, have a hard time spending money and taking even the minimum amount of risk. Generally the thought or discussion about money is painful, and they feel safer stashing their money under their mattress than meeting with an investment adviser for an hour a month.

If you fall into this category, you need to come to the realization that you are actually losing money (thanks to inflation) by simply stuffing your money under the mattress or just putting it into a checking account. Sadly, if you are one of the people we are discussing here, you probably don’t care and are perfectly fine with this. You need, however, to come to terms and accept that some very, very easy steps can make a dramatic impact on your future.

If you are fortunate enough to have enough money to retire off of and don’t care about increasing your savings, think about the other great things you can do with money. You can leave a great legacy for your family, make a difference in the world by helping fund medical research, give a child a chance to receive a good education, etc.

The best thing to do would be to simply ask your colleagues, attorneys and CPA, for a referral for a great financial planner, and schedule one hour a month to discuss your financial situation. If you are too busy, and even that sounds painful, or you know absolutely nothing about investing, here’s the easiest thing you can do to guarantee solid returns. Put your money in a low-cost index fund. In other words, put your money in a mutual fund that mirrors the S&P 500 (or similar index) that has less than 1% costs.

Why? This allows you to invest in the broad market, which will outperform the majority of other investors. Secondly, you don’t need to know a thing about stocks, analyzing companies, finance, or anything like that. All you need to do is take a few minutes to set up your online accounts to automatically deposit funds into your account and purchase shares on a reoccurring basis. You don’t need to be engaged at all. Your passive investing will automatically make you wealthier.

Here are two recommended funds with the lowest expense ratios:

Vanguard 500 Index (VFINX) - $3,000 minimum investment with an 0.18% expense ratio.

Fidelity Spartan 500 Index Investor (FSMKX) - If you have $10,000 or more, invest in this fund with its attractive 0.10% expense ratio.

S&P 500

Don’t you want your income to look like the graphs above? Don’t continue to lose your hard earned money to inflation. It is so easy to significantly boost your wealth by simply opening an online brokerage account (such as tdameritrade.com) and setting up your account to automatically purchase these funds on a regular basis.
