I do read, take courses and seminars, listen to audios while training and driving, but it looks like the climb to the top is a slow process. Sometimes that means going to a seminar, sometimes it means auditing a class at the local university, sometimes it means just reading articles and books that are in my field. By keeping my skills current, I am a valuable asset to my employer. The high salary and raises just seem to follow. Good topic. I think too many people get fixated on the six-figure salary and worry much less about developing skills and alternative streams of income. Being surrounded by many six-figure types at work (admittedly in a high-COLA like Los Angeles), they have as many money problems or more than those who make much less than that. It really boils down to the basics of spending less than you earn and developing extra income streams year over year. Great post. Part of that comes in getting more experience as a freelancer and being able to raise my rates slightly for the next job. Or just in taking on more work by knowing more places to look.
